The design of the senior living environment will be inspired by the symbolic qualities and characteristics of wind. Wind shapes the environment that we live in, which contrasts the way our environment sometimes has the ability to shape us, as humans, living in a built environment. In the same manner, the focus of the senior facility will be to positively influence (or “shape”) the quality of life for its elderly residents by providing continued learning opportunities and integration of innovative healthcare. Wind offers many distinct characteristics which will be influential in the design of the space. Thick, vertical walls and columns will bestow a sense of stability and strength similar to the power associated with strong winds. Elements of flight will juxtapose the architectural strength through the incorporations of delicate, airy materials and finishes. The horizontal nature of wind will be demonstrated through long lines and low furnishings. Natural light and neutral hues will provide a nurturing environment to further promote the continuation of learning and a calm sense of healing.
